Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth (SGHY), a New York State not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, provides low income middle school youth with after-school, in-school, and summer enrichment programs their schools lack and their families cannot afford.
During the school year Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth brings quality enrichment programs in sports, dance, hands-on science, outdoor nature, cultural exchange, music and drama to NYC public middle schools serving students from very-low-income households — including children living in homeless shelters.
During the summer, SGHY sponsors those children to attend at least one week at a top quality sleep-away camp. For these kids, this week provides their only time away from concrete neighborhoods, first times swimming in a lake, holding a frog, beholding a nighttime sky full of stars. Schools report that children attending SGHY activities and camps show improvement in attendance, academic progress, self-esteem, behavior, and fitness. This continues Sophie Gerson's half-century of great teaching as a NYC public middle school physical education & health teacher and her outstanding educational leadership as a School Board Member and President.
